Car Battery replacement and installation FAQs
Posted on April 13, 2020
On average your car battery should last between two and five years, but some can last as long as six years. Different factors can impact how long your battery will hold up. If you have your car outside year round, it may not last as long as one that is kept in a garage.
However, no matter how long or short it lasts, when it goes out, you're stuck without a ride. This can be frustrating to deal with. It is especially challenging if it's your only vehicle. Getting a car battery installation is probably on your list of things to do as soon as possible. Maybe you have considered trying to replace the car battery on your own. This is certainly something you could try. Here are some tips on how to replace your car battery.
How To Replace Car Battery
The first step you must take when replacing your car battery is to locate and remove the old one. Make sure you are parked on a level surface with the emergency brake engaged. Turn the car off and remove the keys.
Once you locate the battery (you may need to use a user's manual to find it), it's time to begin removal. Always remove the negative cable first and secure it with a zip tie away from anything metal. Your next step is to disconnect the positive cable, which is often red. Make sure to secure this also with a tie, ensuring it doesn't touch anything metal. Also, make sure the two cables don't come in contact with one another.
Now you're ready to remove it from its place. Remove any connectors that are holding it down and lift it out.
Once the battery is removed, you can place the new one in the place where you got the old one out. Make sure that you have the proper battery replacement before you install it. Once you get it, secure it carefully by fastening the connectors on the bracket. When reconnecting the cables, put the positive one on first followed by the negative cable. Use a wrench to tighten the cable over the terminal.
It's important to make sure that you replace the cables in the right order, so you don't short-circuit anything. Also, it's critical to ensure that the cables don't touch each other or any metal. This could be damaging and potentially dangerous if it happens, so be careful.
You can return your old battery at the auto parts store or a recycling centre. Don't throw it in the garbage because it has corrosive material on it, which is not safe.
