As the calendar ticks toward the halfway point of the year, automobile manufacturers start teasing the release of next year's vehicles. Kia is no different, and rumblings about the 2022 Kia Sportage SUV are already starting.
Making its original debut in 1997, the Kia Sportage is a compact crossover that has almost a quarter-century under its belt as a dependable, reliable, and spacious SUV. Thanks to a design refresh that occurred in 2020, the 2022 Kia Sportage is still a bold and stylish choice for drivers in Calgary. However, it is due for a redesign, so 2022 is probably the final year for the current generation. But there is nothing old or dated about this fun and feisty SUV.
Insiders do not expect any changes to the Sportage's powertrain options for the 2020 model year. That includes two engine options. The standard engine is a 2.4-litre GDI four-cylinder engine that pairs with wither front-wheel drive (FWD) or Dynamax all-wheel drive (AWD) depending on what drivers want and need. It offers 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.
The upgraded engine option is a 2.0-litre turbo GDI four-cylinder engine that produces 237 horsepower. Both options provide quick acceleration, especially on the highway, and they glide effortlessly through traffic responding to the slightest touch of the pedals or steering wheel.
For 2022, the Kia Sportage is likely to keep a similar lineup of trim levels, of which six are currently available for sale in Calgary and across Canada. Though pricing will probably change slightly, drivers can assume that a similar price scale will take effect, with the base model starting around $26,000 and the high-end model topping out around $40,000.
Kia has transformed itself from an automaker focused on being fast, fun, and frugal to being an automaker dedicated to sportiness and luxury. Kia still offers a great value compared to its competitors, but the interiors are no longer cheap, and the standard features are no longer lacking.
Drivers in Calgary can find such standard features on the 2022 Kia Sportage as an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, privacy tint glass, heated front seats, and dual-level cargo floor.
Going through the model levels, drivers can also add in additional features such as a smart key with push button start, panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, and many more driver-assist features, such as parking sensors, blind spot detection system, and more.
Inside, the Sportage features 868 litres of cargo capacity behind the second row in addition to 2,660 litres of total interior volume for passengers and cargo.
When comparing the 2022 Kia Sportage to its closest competitors, it is easy to see that Kia offers more standard features at a base price that is thousands less. The well-appointed interior, stylish exterior, and powerful engine options combine to offer a great choice for drivers in Calgary and across Canada that want a comfortable and capable SUV that focuses on the comfort and safety of the passengers in its two rows.
