2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid

Despite its fresh looks, the first Kia Sportage launched almost 30 years ago. A few generations and many improvements later, we find the 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid, one of the best compact SUVs in the market. Also, this lineup has received a hybrid version for the first time.

Performance and Driveability

The new Kia Sportage comes with four trims but only one option for the engine. It’s a 1.6L Gamma II Turbo GDI HEV. This engine is equipped with a 16V dual overhead cam (DOHC) and continuously variable transmission (CVVT) with Hydraulic Lash Adjuster and four valves per cylinder. The electric motor is a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with a lithium-ion battery.

The new Kia’s engine also runs on gasoline, and the vehicle’s performance depends on the fuel used. While on gasoline, it delivers 177 hp and a torque capacity of 195 lb-ft. The electric motor has 59 hp and the same torque capacity. The combined output of this powertrain is 277 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. As for fuel efficiency, this hybrid SUV makes 6.1L/100km in the city and 6.3L/100km on highways.

Interior and Exterior

Although the trims look pretty much the same across the lineup, interior details change considerably from one trim to another. While the entry-level model comes with cloth upholstery, the flagship model comes with synthetic quilt-pattern leather seats.

The PHEV SX also has premium pedals, door scuffs, rear floor heating ducts, and air vents. All trims have heated front seats, lumbar support for the driver’s seat, a heated steering wheel, and foldable rear seats, significantly expanding cargo capacity.

This lineup uses LED lights almost everywhere: headlights, positioning lights, taillights, fog lights, and daytime running lights are all LED. Side view mirrors are power-adjustable, come with signal repeaters and have the same colour as the rest of the car. The flagship model also has a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, and heated side-view mirrors.

Tech and Safety

The new Kia Sportage has a 31.24cm multimedia interface with navigation tools. All models are compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Other standard features include a HomeLink system, Kia Connect, and a 10.66cm instrument cluster. While basic trims come with a six-speaker sound system, the PHEV SX comes with a Harman Kardon premium sound system.

As for safety, all trims share the same features: six airbags, electronic brake and stability control (ESC), four-wheel ABS, blindspot collision avoidance, lane follow, lane keeps assists and an immobilizer. Additionally, upper trims come with a rear cross-traffic collision avoidance system and forward collision avoidance assist.
